Forte Vecchio in Punta Sabbioni: Why this Historic Landmark is Falling Apart
The "Forte Vecchio": Instructions for a Perfect Decay (for only 22 Million!)
The abandoned majesty of Forte Vecchio - Original Photos
There is something poetically masochistic about watching the symbol of Punta Sabbioni crumble. We are talking about Forte Vecchio, a majestic red-brick fortress that, instead of hosting tourists and culture, has decided to take up extreme gardening: ivy is doing an excellent job of colonizing its 1,500 square meters.
Part of the "Via dei Forti" (Route of the Forts), the castle is currently for sale by the State Property Agency. The restoration cost? A mere 20 million euros. While citizens dream of museums, cultural events, and high-level tourism, bureaucracy remains frozen.
It’s fascinating how environmental restrictions are rock-solid for restoration, yet seem suspiciously flexible for ugly new concrete buildings nearby. So, if you happen to have 22 million euros in your pocket and a passion for bureaucratic mazes, go for it: the Fort is yours! Free ivy included.
