Easter in Cavallino-Treporti: between work, boats, and family traditions

Here in Cavallino Treporti, Easter holds a special feeling: the scent of spring mingling with the excitement of the start of the season. It’s the time when everything begins anew. But how do those who live here year-round experience it?

The Crossroads: Those Who Celebrate and Those Who Rush

For many of us, Easter isn’t just about chocolate eggs—it’s the start signal. For those with a “9 to 5” job (as we say here to distinguish those who don’t follow the rhythms of tourism), it’s the last chance to relax with friends and family.

But for so many others, Easter means getting back to work. Campgrounds, hotels, and restaurants reopen their doors, and the seasonal work shifts into high gear. If you asked me how many holidays I’ve spent working… well, I’ve lost count!

My “insider” tip: If you’re looking for absolute peace and quiet, Easter isn’t the ideal time to come visit us. But if you love the energy of the hustle and bustle, then it’s the perfect time!

Easter Morning: Bells and Hymns

On Sunday morning, the pace slows down a bit. Many people gather for Mass: some do it out of faith, and others because they’re part of the parish choirs and help bring the celebration to life. It’s a deeply felt moment of community, before the big chaos of lunch.

Lunch: Better in the Garden Than at a Restaurant

What do we do for lunch? The truth is, knowing the crowds are about to arrive, locals prefer to “lay low.”

  • At a friend’s house: People look for whoever has the largest backyard or the most spacious terrace.
  • In the “orto”: Many people here have private plots of land set up specifically for these large gatherings.
  • On a boat: Those who want to go all out load their lunch onto a boat and head out to find a secluded spot in the lagoon where tourists can’t reach.

Easter Monday: The Barbecue Ritual

Easter Monday is sacred: picnics, outdoor excursions, and the unmistakable scent of charcoal rising from every garden. The unwritten rule? If you spent Sunday with family, Monday is for friends (and vice versa).

Sport and Meditation: An Escape to the Lagoon

For those who can’t sit still at the table, there are two options:

  1. Energy: A run along our bike paths or an energetic row through the canals.
  2. Silence: Fishing enthusiasts hop in a boat and disappear. There’s nothing better than meditating in the middle of the lagoon, far from car horns, hoping to return home with a sea bass for dinner.
